07.18.2018: Reflection Questions-
- How does something you learned connect to what you already knew?
- How did it extend your thinking further?
- What questions do you still have?
- Think of one thing you have learned in class that you can apply in Peer Power classroom or another class or another part of your life. What is it, and how can you apply it?
The scenarios we did today were very helpful. It gave me a better understanding of what my job in the class will be, and how to behave in class. -Logan
ReplyDeleteToday was very interesting and very full of knowledge both old and new. I loved the lecture from Dr. Marygrace about intrinsic and extrinsic values and worth. Dr. Sara’s lecture on social justice, biases, and diversity expanded the thinking process I had, and made me open to many different ways of approach different cultures.
ReplyDeleteThe SCnearios were the best part of today! They were very fun and interactive and they give you insight on what days could be like in the actual classroom.
ReplyDeleteThe SCenario practice of actually going through a classroom situation was definitely helpful. It's easy to get a bit lost in all the training, so seeing the techniques actually applied was very helpful
ReplyDeleteThe mindfulness techniques have become a daily part of my life. Today's discussion on mindfulness only extended my knowledge on how to implement it in my life. I enjoyed talking about diversity and hearing others view points.
ReplyDeleteI like the use of mindfulness and gratitude practice in the classroom. I’ve found that to be a helpful practice in my own life, and I love the encouragement to share it with our students. It is a practice that will change their thinking and can help them in every area of life, especially starting it off that young.
ReplyDeleteThe teaching scenarios were a fun way to get a hint of what the classrooms will be like when we get it our schools. It will be easier to transition into the classroom with that in mind.
ReplyDeleteMy thinking was extended further when we discussed our strengths and wrote our "wishlist" in Marygrace session.
ReplyDeleteLooking closely at our own goals and values and learning how to classify them as instrumental or intrinsic will be useful when we start working with students and helping them start to form and identify their own values and work towards their goals.
ReplyDeleteToday we did some reflective activities, we talked about social justice, mindfulness, and simulation. I really enjoyed doing the simulation, we had some laughs and also got to practice and identify the different teach like a champ strategies used. All in all a positive day!

I enjoyed the scenarios today, because it put everything in perspective and helped me understand how to use the theories more effectively within the classroom.
ReplyDeleteToday, Hasan’s Session really helped me understand how I could intervene with students in the classroom. I was nervous about being pushed into that setting without practice and I think this was very helpful. Hopefully, we will get to do that again! The diversity session with Sarah was really touching. She just reiterated the beauty of diversity and being open minded. She helped us understand that diversity is not just confined to race and gender.
ReplyDeleteLearning to identify the different elements of diversity helped me be able to identify how to avoid biased behaviors towards students. It was interesting to hear the different stereotypes of different groups of peoples. I learned to find something that connects people and use that to my advantage to help the scholars and mentor them better.
ReplyDeleteThe SCenarios we did today were very helpful to see what it will be like in the classroom as a success coach and how we should go about tackling certain situations and behaviors. It helped us out to use and identify some of the teaching techniques and theories we have learned through training.
ReplyDeleteThe heart to heart session today was very helpful in pointing out stereotypes that we may have ourselves about a group of people. Dr. Graces’ mindfulness if especially helpful when dealing with day to day stresses and how to deal with them. And the scenarios where an excellent way to display the knowledge we have learned in training thus far! Kudos to all presenters !!
ReplyDeleteSarah’s session was very eye opening on breaking down our biases. Hasan’s session was great because we all put the different theories to use. MaryGrace taught us to focus on our strengths and build on another up.
ReplyDeleteAll of today’s activities were eye opening. In our life lesson section with Sara, we had an open concept discussion involving the entire class. The ice breaker was also cool today. Lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteSeeing and acting out the different SCcenarios definitely helped me. It made us think about future issues in the classroom and how to use TLC and put theories into practice. I will have to be quick to remember these things in the classroom when different situations arise.
ReplyDeleteThe character building portion of today was very helpful in learning about intrinsic value and who we are and why we do things. Hearing other people’s values really put into perspective how diverse and unique we are. Our goals have value to us and we should keep that value and not let anyone or anything get in the way of who we are and what we enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Sara’s talk about diversity and learning to be aware and accepting of all students and peers, but I wish we spoke more on how to professionally handle situations where stereotypes or racism/sexism are involved with the students we deal with .
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the history tangents in Dr. Mary-Grace and Dr. Benson’s sessions because it has helped to understand how we think and behave the way we do today at a deeper level. Which inspires me to help empower those around me!
ReplyDeleteThe scenarios truly helped see what we might run into while in the classrooms. You’ll have a lot of diversity from looks to learners, and you have to truly use what we learn to help not only the scholars but the classrooms be successful.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the sensitivity training can be extremely useful when used correctly. Understanding the differences between us can help us avoid misunderstandings. It is probably best to separate a personal feeling with a professional one. Thomas N.
ReplyDeleteToday, in Mr. Hasans’s class we did these skits that were based in a classroom practicing how to be a success Coach. It helped because it gave visually and physical experience for helping the students and teacher.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Dr. MaryGrace’s session. It really made me think about my goals, what the purpose of those goals are, and what parts of my character need to be strengthened or drawed on to get there. I can see this ability being used in the classroom as well to help students understand that their strengths can help in multiple areas of their life to reach multiple goals! And also to identify the weaknesses that those strengths can help grow on as well. I also enjoyed Dr. Benson’s session about diversity. It hit on a lot of topics that are close to my heart and that I write about in my classes often. These are the things we really need to pay close attention to in order to create a more unified classroom and world!
ReplyDeleteIt was really helpful when we did the scenarios and we were able to see the different approaches that the Success Coaches took. I also really appreciated us going over culture and diversity. I think it's important, not just as Success Coaches but also as human beings, to be aware that even though we all may look different, or have different experiences, that we can still acknowledge those things, while also being respectful and inclusive.
ReplyDeleteTalking about diversity and character helped me see myself in the kids I’ll be working with. There will be some scholars I relate to and others I’ll have to empathize with and seek to understand. The scenarios we went other put these concepts into practice.
ReplyDeleteToday I learned that the bedrock of myself is my character. The goals I have in life are important because they are instrumental in allowing me to reach full self actualization. These instrumental goals are intrinsic only in the way they provide character building.
ReplyDeleteThe idea between intrinsic and instrumental value has something I've always been aware with, but never had the right labels for. It only solidifies the idea that we should be aware of our own personal values and goals and realize that they are often very different than those around us, and that's okay. We should be open and willing to communicate our true selves to others around us and accept those for who they are. A lot of times students will not see the value of the information you're teaching, and by getting to understand students' true selves you can better get them motivated to be who they want to be.
ReplyDeleteThe lesson involving diversity and cultural sensitivity was a good refresher today. While I know about diversity and cultural sensitivity and being sensitive to those differences, it’s interesting to see the different types of diversity that are out there that I hadn’t considered before. It was also impactful hearing about people’s experiences that they have had pertaining to being stereotyped.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Dr. Mary Grace’s session because I learned to control my focus as well as keeping in mind that confidence is a good thing. I can apply this to the classroom because the more I think I am a capable person with good qualities I can build the students confidence. Also by controlling my focus I can stay calm in the classroom and keep my full attention on the students.
ReplyDeleteI think it was really eye opening to think about diversity. Sara presented some wild concepts about global and contemporary issues, and it was great hearing from other coaches about their experiences and how they perceived diversity. Some questions I still have (because we ran out of time) are what does actively promoting diversity look like in classroom and how can we make younger scholars understand it's importance.
ReplyDeleteToday was helpful. The session with Dr. Hassan was helpful because we seen what are effective and ineffective ways to interact with the children. Also, learning how to apply the theories and techniques was something needed because it helped me further grasp what is going on. The last session with Sara was AMAZING because perception and stereotypes are major things we will have to deal with, not only in our lives, but the kids as well. Learning how to recognize how biased and how we perceive others really helps.🤗
ReplyDeleteThe scenarios given today were very helpful. They connected with some of the things that I already knew. They actually made me realize some of the things that I were doing could be improved to get a better outcome.
ReplyDeleteIn my last session, we discussed character and how it is a part of oneself. Taking what I learned today from it, I could apply to a classroom and to a student to be more of an encouragement to them when they don’t feel like being self-encouraging. To be a student’s “beacon of light” for the day can also improve how you see yourself “character” wise which will be a win-win for the success coach and the student all the way round.
I enjoyed the session about diversity with Mrs. Sarah. It’s very important to learn about the differences that everyone has to understand the world for what it is.
ReplyDeleteThis session was not only beneficial for Peer Power, but it was beneficial for outside of Peer Power. The understanding and acceptance that the world is full of “Colors.” It is best to see color/individuality that makes up people rather than saying you do not see color at all.
The scenarios were very enlightening. I enjoyed having the input of prior success coaches to tell us what to expect and how they deal with certain situations within a classroom. Also, it was a great way to incorporate those techniques and theories that we learned last week.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the diversity session further enlightened me about the different -isms and the kinds of bullying that can occur when in the schools.
ReplyDeleteThe scenarios have a lot of practical benefit for everyone. It gave us all the opportunity to practice the theories and techniques that we have learned in training. Also, the discussion of social injustice began to open the door to a much needed conversation. A frank discussion of race could great personal and professional benefits for each individual as well as the organization as a whole.
ReplyDeleteToday’s Scenarios Showed Perfect Exapmles Of What The Class Room Would Look Like, Everyone Did A Great Job, And Sarah and Mary Grace’s Sessions Were Very Hepuful In Bringing Out Our Inner Seleces And Embracing That With A Growth Mindset.
ReplyDeleteThe mindfulness piece is always a wonderful activity. I don't know anything else that can quickly calm me down so much (I was definately still singing and dancing before our session). The cultural piece has also caused me to want to further my introspection about my unconscious gravitation towards people. Sara's question earlier of how well we know others in different leagues made me realize that I've been with this company for so long yet have only taken the time to learn about very few of my fellow success coaches. This is something that I will be trying to improve from now on.

ReplyDeleteToday I learned about how our perceptions can shape our life. I also learned we fall back into what we know and what is comfortable in a new environment. It is important to be aware of one's self and fall backs. I learned that I need to be more mindful of criticizing myself because it can affect others.
What I learned today was about sexism, bullying and colorism which exists everywhere in the world but more so in the classroom. People or students typically form a stereotype of the success coach the first day they met us, which can be good or bad. I believe the tools we are learning in training can help us persuade the student to see who we really are and help form a learning relationship. Also the session with Dr. Mary Grace was helpful because students can get aggressive and tired so it was useful learning the mindful exercise because it can be used when the class is obnioxius, loud, and extremely playful.
ReplyDeleteWe had a great discussion on diversity with Sara today. This topic is something we are often aware about, but I believe we rarely touch upon it. As an organization, Peer Power is an organization that is not afraid of diversity. We love it and we're not afraid of talking about it.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, Dr. Marygrace's lesson on intrinsic and instrumental value reminded me of who I want to be as a person and what I consider important in my life.
If you know better, you’ll do better. Is surreal when it comes to life... but if you cannot recognize what needs to be corrected in your personal life... it can make you question your self growth. So in order to extend my thinking, I think it would be wise to pay attention to how I think about about others, and continue to think optimistically and enforce being solution oriented, because we are all a family.
ReplyDeleteThe mindfulness tips I learn today connected to my understanding of mindfulness and calm thinking.
ReplyDeleteThe training today extended my thinking further by just giving new POVs, or ways to think about it, which help me understand other more.
Why is Peer Power not global yet?
Like I said earlier the mindfulness tips will truly help me calm down and help others calm down.

How do I interfere to use the teaching techniques without interpreting the teacher?
ReplyDeleteToday’s topics about culture and experiences helped in self awareness and realizing what we have that we might not be aware of all the time.
ReplyDeleteDiversity was such an eye opening topic. We also talked about goals and what they mean to us.
In addition, we practiced a classroom situation and how to deal with difficulties a student might have.

It’s better to focus on strengths and be aware of your weaknesses in both yourself and your students to make everyone into better people.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the social justice discussion. We talked about cultural sensitivity and being aware of people’s differences. Someone said that we think of society more of a melting pot as opposed to salad bowls where we work together but are still unique
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the mindfulness, awareness, and discussions around strengths and deficit models of self-expression. Being aware of the self in various situations helps contribute positively to the growth of the self and others. To this end, I have noticed that as the day progresses, I find myself increasingly anxious in class/training due to the tyranny of time and trying to cram in material when there is not an appropriate amount of time. I can tell, in the teaching styles of the training coordinators, who is suited to the topic, and when who is struggling. When the coordinator is struggling, it contributes to my own anxiety. (I recognize this is something for me to work on personally.) In sessions where the floor is open to the trainees, allows for equal sharing opportunities, and connects with deep learning (quality learning over quantity learning), I feel more comfortable expressing my own opinion, I feel valued as a student, and I feel connected to my peers as well as the trainer. I am glad to notice this difference because it may be similar for scholars in the classroom who need to "just get through" a topic, assignment or test, and as a consequence, they do not actually learn. I also appreciated the opportunity to role play the skills we have been learning conceptually, as this helped me deepen my understanding and give me some confidence in new skills.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the scenarios even though they are in a controlled setting I can begin to grasp an idea of how situations will arise in the classroom that will present opportunities that will strengthen my ability to teach and enhance the students capabilities to achieve success.
