07.17.2018: Reflection Questions-

  • How does something you learned connect to what you already knew?
  •  How did it extend your thinking further?
  •  What questions do you still have?
  •  Think of one thing you have learned in class that you can apply in Peer Power classroom or another class or another part of your life. What is it, and how can you apply it?

  1. I really enjoyed the discussion in today’s Teach like a Champion session. A lot of what we talked about are strategies that I’ve seen work in classrooms, and even employed myself, but not had a name or precise definition for. It will be more helpful in the future to know exactly what strategies I’m using and how they are working.

  3. No opt out it a valuable strategy for motivating scholars and ourselves everyday! It's not about taking the hit it's about how many hits you can take and keep moving forward. Thomas N.

  4. I refreshed my memory in English today regarding sentences and figurative language. I enjoyed these lessons because I love English! Also, mind mapping will now be a tool I utilize in my everyday setting, because it is a great tool to simplify certain understandings.

  5. During the English section the concept of strech it when discussing the poem came into play when we were breaking down the poem and talking about the theme of the poem

  6. I love English, so I loved discussing the poem specifically. The grammar was a huge refresh. I knew the information, but it took time to recall it. It reminded me of the basics of grammar that I never thought about. The refresher will help with teaching students the information.

  7. The english part about thinking critically about what the poem meant and how you can break down paragraphs or phrases to get a deeper meaning behind them. It made me realize that even the smallest words or phrases can have bigger and deeper meanings if you put in the effort to understand them.

  8. Several of the TLC strategies look like they would pair very well with ones we learned last week. Specifically, Warm/Strict would work well with the No Opt Out. If a student is upset or annoyed and refuses to participate or answer question, they can be brought back into participation. -Logan S.

  9. I guess a question I still have is how do we know the limit of personal interpretation vs right is right when dealing with English classes and the analysis of a text .

  10. Learning the different types of sentence structures allowed me to be able to indentify them faster. They also add meaning to the words and help visualize each sentence better. Mapping a concept helps summarize certain topics without overwhelming your mind while studying.

  11. Today, Hasan went over the beauty of concept mapping. He really emphasized how important it is to group your ideas. Tyra went over multiple teaching strategies to reinforce students to keep trying and also be efficient. I think these strategies really help with an altercation we might face in the classroom. We also went over a few English skills that made me realize that I am definitely not the best at English but these sessions will help.

  12. We have started on some interesting new concepts. The English section was good for me because it has been a long time since I have taken a basic English class. It is nice to have a refresher course becuase, while I may on some level just know this stuff, I have to identify what students need to learn.

  13. Learning the TLC strategies really helped me understand the importance they have in the classroom. It also showed me how without realizing it I was already doing a lot of those when I worked.

  14. I totally forgot about simple/complex/compound etc clauses in sentence structure so it was good to revisit that. I had to learn AP Style punctuation for journalism school and it’s good to refresh on the basics that aren’t AP style.

  15. The different types of concept maps we went over today gave a way to organize all of the information we have learned over the past week and showed how we can continue to build on ideas in an organized way. The English content was also a helpful review that helped get me back into the feel of what an English classroom consists of and the thought processes needed for breaking down sentences and texts.

  16. Mind mapping is a great way to organize thoughts and help students visually construct information in easy to follow and understand patterns. Mind maps are inherently easy to follow with arrows pointing to where you need to go as well as how information is divided and separted. Allowing students to create and hang mind maps across the room would really benefit and help them when it came to retaining and learning new concepts, vocabulary, and information.

  17. Today was a good day. Tyra’s class was very informative with learning strategies about how to interact with children, especially when answering questions with them. This was valuable to learn because sometimes children don’t lik answering questions because of various reasons. Also, learning about concept mapping was VERY informative because it is something that is helpful not only for the classroom, but also everyday as well. Learning that method was a great way to gather information when my thoughts get jumbled and confusing. Overall, today was a good day even though I wasn’t feeling too good.😊

  18. I enjoyed Tyra’s presentation on the teach like champion topics. I thought she did an excellent job giving us different techniques to make sure the students stay involved in the classroom as well as expanding their minds to bring them to the absolute right answer. I also enjoyed the English portion of today, going over the poem helped me think more insightfully and deeply.

  19. Today we accomplished concept maps, teach like a champion, and concepts in English. I was glad to have refreshed my understanding of English today. The teach like a champion session today provided tips on how we, as success coaches, could actively engage the scholars to think more critically. I believe this is a good idea especially when trying to get more participants.

  20. Previously (for the Team Leaders) we briefly discussed without apologies. Today we were given actual dialogue that we could use in a situation that calls for it, such as revisiting past covered subjects or introducing new material that student may consider to be difficult. Having this dialogue really helps because I've never really had any kind of method to combat a situation like this other than just desperately encouraging the students to participate and to push through the material together. Being able to take this new information and expand on it is going to be beneficial for me and the students I work with in the future.

  21. I can honestly say the English lesson was a refresher because I had prior knowledge to the types of literary devices and what some examples were. It’s always good to practice using correct punctuation and how to properly identify different parts of a sentence. Being that I believe I am a good writer this session was by far the most knowledge I’ve learned this summer.

  22. Today I learned different strategies to present to students who may not have good note taking skills. The concept map will be a fun way to take notes and be artistic at the same time. The english class was very fun and I learned a little more about the types of sentences and what they contain.

  23. The idea that you should never call content boring or difficult stands out to me. I think I would be tempted in a teaching setting to talk about content that way in order to make the students feel like I get that it will be difficult. However, it needs a follow-up that even though it may be difficult or challenging, it is important, and we have everything we need to do it. I can use this in the things I teach the kids I babysit too. Sometimes we talk about hard things happening in their lives, and I think it’s always good to acknowledge how hard something is but to also follow it up with encouragement.

  24. I enjoyed learning about concept maps today. I had heard about them before in school, but I had never really used them. After today’s session, I learned how useful they can be as a learning tool. I want to use them in the classroom because they can be really helpful for visual learners. I also thought about how different types of concept maps are useful for different subjects. For example, a hierarchy concept map could be useful for organizing a paper or thesis statement.

  25. I extended my thinking further by learning new concepts when it comes to helping students in class. These concepts include: the way to address students, problem solving, mind maps, etc.

I also refreshed my memory with some English topics over review.

  26. Using mind maps is a fun and easy way to help brainstorm a lot of ideas and topics and it can also help give an overview of what the students have learned in the course, helping them do a quick review over anything they would need to know for a test. I think using them in the classrooms will be a good idea.

  27. The questions that I still have are related to the information we received today in TLC. I don’t know if it’s just me as a person, but I feel like there are ways where Format Matters can be modified. I think that in certain situations Format Matters could be beneficial, but in other scenarios it would be an appropriate tool to use. I just feel that Format Matters could be misconstrued in certain areas.

  28. During the lecture with Hasan about concept mapping, I thought I could apply it to my English classrooms. My initial idea was to use a hierarchy concept map to visually show inner connections of themes within a story. The secondary thought was to use a concept map to represents relationships and motives of actions between characters within a story.

  29. Today I learned that the majority of people are visual learners. Learning visually is an active and passive process. The process of learning visually is very complex. This makes being aware of what we are actually learning very difficult. Mind mapping helps to represent our focus on a topic in a visual way.

  30. Something I learned today was that 65% of the population are visual learners. I connected it to the fact that everyone I knew was a visual learner and everyone starts out as a visual learner. This allowed me to further my thinking by showing me that I have to frame how I teach to match every learner in the classroom. Not only do I have accommodate the visual learners, but there is still 35% of the classroom that won’t be as engaged with visual concepts. We have to make sure our teaching styles are not focused on one group.

  31. Mind mapping as an effective way to organize your thoughts, especially when the information seems random and chaotic at first.

I realized it can push critical thinking to the next level for both myself and my students by providing a visual source of information.

How do you gain authority in the classroom?

I learned effective teaching strategies in TLC that I can use in both the classroom and in my personal life.

  32. The English session was the most interesting one to me today. We also talked about mapping and how it helps student understand the material more and it keeps them engaged and working together.
We also learned different methods to talk with students when they don’t know the answer to something.

  33. I really enjoyed going over the different types of mind maps, because it extended my thinking on the different subjects that each could be used for. It was also really helpful when we went over the content for English, because it helped refresh my memory.

  34. I always find teach like a championship strategies to be really inspiring. These can be really useful in the classroom as it instructs us how to be competent mentors. We need to know how to uplift our students when they are opting out, encourage them to answer questions, and build their confidence.

In the English activity today, I learned to think "deeper," as would Mrs. King put it. The class made me think about myself. It made me think about what I need to let go and what I need to rejuvenate in my life and myself.

  36. It has been so long I had forgotten the grammar terms, even though I have been writing feverishly over the past couple of semesters I really needed the review. I liked the Mind Mapping class, I probably will incorporate some of those principles into my routine when writing future research papers. I really enjoyed interpreting the poem it is always fun to see what other people's interpretations and perspectives.
