07.11.2018: Reflection Questions-
  • How does something you learned connect to what you already knew?
  •  How did it extend your thinking further?
  •  What questions do you still have?
  •  Think of one thing you have learned in class that you can apply in Peer Power classroom or another class or another part of your life. What is it, and how can you apply it?

  4. I enjoyed learning about the breathing excercise. Its a great way to take a quick breather, reset your head, and steady your mind. I feel like it will also be a helpful way to let a student take a minute to breathe if they are stressed or tired. -Logan Sanford

  5. The bias training by Mrs. King was very nice. Usually sessions like this show a lacking of understanding by an individual, but this training was informational without victimizing or accusing.

  6. Learning the correct way to breathe is a fun and useful way to help relieve stress and I plan to use it in my life to improve my posture, mood and also use it in the classroom to help relieve any tension that may arise.

  7. Some questions I have relate more to the EIQ session. I'd really like to know more tips on how to convey certain emotions into words or what strategies could I use in situations where I fail to describe my emotions simply because there aren't any accurate enough words (that I know haha) to pair with them. I think most people that I interact with tend to assume that I'm always in a good mood but sometimes that an cause some dissonance for both parties. I am hoping to get better with this so that I can employed it in the classroom and in my personal life.

  8. I really enjoyed the session on social justice. I learned that I should refrain from biased behavior. I should focus my mission on helping kids. I also learned how to deal with stress. The breathing method will really help in times of stress.

  9. Today was alittle emotional for me because we dealt with emotions and things that trigger us. The last session was rough for me just because I realized how emotionally unaware I was. But overall it was a great experience because I learned that I need a break and I need a rest sometimes. I already knew about my social awareness and how I interact with but now I’m more aware of how my emotions can affect people. Today was a great day and I’m glad I went through it.

Today has taught me more about self control and being more emotionally in tune with myself and Those around me. I have learned my weaknesses and have gained tips on how to strengthen them. Today i also learned my own biases and how to approach them. Understanding that I have some things myself I need to break down and/or build up! Kudos to the presenters your guys are amazing!! 💯

  11. Today’s workshop expanded my thinking in many ways. One of my favorites were Ms. King’s class. She opened my mind to things I was not so conscious about due to the way society has programmed us, but I learned that we are in control of how we treat others and how we react.

  12. During the mindfulness session, I learned a new way of breathing which I plan on applying to my life. I have already been applying meditation and mindfulness to my daily life, so the session helped with my breathing technique. The mindfulness will help keep me calm and collected when stressful situations occur in the classroom.

  13. I really enjoyed all three sessions today! I learned a lot of new ways to be more mindful of my actions and reaction as well as the details in life. The sessions today helped give me time to really slow down and think about my life, problem management, and how to deal with situations in life as well as in the classroom that will be beneficial to me and the people around me. I feel much more relaxed, motivated, and prepared for life after today.

  14. Today, my fellow success coach Amber stated to "treat yourself as a friend." I definitely needed to hear that message at this moment. As Tyra stated, often times we give so much that we are too drained to give to ourselves. It's good to know that it's okay to be selfish sometimes. I have to remember to take care of me! That's my take away.

  15. One thing I learned in the Power of self session today was just how important emotional intelligence is in how you view and experience the day to day. Knowing the importance of emotional intelligence particularly personal competence and your strengths and weaknesses can help me in the peer power classroom by being more aware of not just my emotions but the different possibilities of the emotional intelligence of the scholars and the teachers and it makes me more aware of what I can expect. Learning about the horizontal breathing was also really nice and can be used to calm myself and even the scholars down in high stress situations.

  16. Jennifer:
I think understanding our emotions, biases, and knowing how to fully relax will be really beneficial. I can utilize this in my own life, but it will also help me assist the students in recognizing their own emotions and being able to relax in stressful situations.

  17. I value the well-being and happiness of others over my own, which can be unhealthy. I am proud of the strength and sincerity of my heart because of what it's survived, but somewhere in that survival and in advocating for others I never truly learned to care for myself. If nothing else, every session showed me that I should be my own advocate first. In loving myself well, I can love everyone else around me better because it will come from a place of wholeness. Undoubtedly, I will continue to place myself in front of any young person in danger. After several instances, I've realized that just a part of who I am. However, there is a balance that I must achieve in order to strengthen the impact of my work. The young people that I work with deserve better, as do I. By valuing my time, breath, limitations and journey, I will become even greater than I already am.

  18. Something I must constantly battle is my anxiety. It doesn't matter how many times I've stood in front of people, it will always be there when I have to do it again. This also affects how I interact with other people, hence the difficulty I have with reaching out to others. I wasn't really surprise when my lowest score in my EIQ test was Relationship Management. This session just help me keep in mind that I shouldn't view my anxiety as a limitation, because it is something that can be overcome. I need to be brave even if my insides are turning to jelly. For these reason, I find the mindfulness practices beneficial. It is a very simple method that can help me calm my nerves and stay focus.

  19. I learned a lot from today's mindfulness session. I have taken a class on it before, so it was nice to be reminded again about how important being mindful is. The concept that stuck with me the most is how often we go about our daily routines without thinking or noticing anything at all. It's important to stop and notice our surroundings and take note of the things happening. One new thing I learned about is the tactical breathing technique. I thought this was a great technique, and I think it can benefit me as a Success Coach by helping me relax and calm down when things get difficult in the classroom.

  20. I learned today the impact that being mindful can have on so many parts of my life. I can be mindful of little things like what I am eating or other routine habits, which makes these simple actions much deeper experiences. But this mindfulness can also help me assess my own and others emotions, a huge advantage when dealing with students. Mindfulness can also help with controlling my biases that I carry with me whether I acknowledge them or not.

I've learned that I need to be mindful of myself and my preconceptions of others. I also need to be mindful of other people's feeling. I need to improve my own weakness.

  22. The bias training has been on my mind and I am grateful that we have the opportunity to have this conversation. The emotional intelligence tests and skills fit really well into the difficult topics and I appreciate how mindfulness was also brought in. These skills are very important beyond school, as in the workplace there are people of all backgrounds and talents who need to work together toward a common goal. When people blindly bias and pile stress on themselves they lose the ability to work with others productively. While these topics can be messy and uncomfortable personally, being brave to explore these thoughts and feelings leads to a greater sense of self and purpose within the world.

  23. After training, I went home and thought about the boat game the most, and I realized that I didn’t understand the instructions and I revealed my occupation. I noticed another friend doing that as well. However, I understood the message behind the game. I realized that all of this really applies in real life. It exposes our nature and personalities and how we act. This is how we actually create our own futures. If we don’t take the moment, someone else will. I really love how Peer Power digs deep in our minds and emotions as well.
Once again, a big thanks to the Peer Power staff and the creative and entertaining work they do.
